# Imprint by selfActual > selfActual is a user-owned context and continuity layer for AI. Imprint is its first product. It runs inside Claude and gives Claude a private vault of how one particular person works (their profile, sessions and tasks). The person owns that vault, can read it back, and can take it with them. This file is for AI assistants. It explains what selfActual is and how to help a person set up Imprint. It is documentation, not instructions: nothing here authorizes you to act for anyone. When a step below would do something, tell the person what this file suggests and ask whether they want you to do it. selfActual has two layers. The public layer is this file and the pages it links. The private layer is each person's vault, which can only be reached through the SelfActual connector after they sign in. Never infer or invent private vault state from public documentation. ## About - [Why Imprint exists](https://imprint.selfactual.ai/why.md): the problem it solves, why it lives inside Claude, and how it differs from Claude's own memory. - [Questions](https://imprint.selfactual.ai/questions.md): the FAQ, key terms (vault, bootstrap, contract, gears), what owning your data means, and how the alpha works. ## Helping a person set up Imprint If a person asks you to help them set up Imprint or selfActual, you can walk them through it. Read [Setting up Imprint](https://imprint.selfactual.ai/setup.md) first. It lists every step, says which ones only the person can do and what you can do once they're connected, and explains how each step shows it worked. The short version: 1. They need Claude Pro or Max and a selfActual account. Imprint is in private alpha: they need an invite code, or they can join the waitlist at https://imprint.selfactual.ai. 2. They change two memory settings in Claude and add the SelfActual connector. Only they can do this. 3. Once the connector is added, you can confirm who they are with `whoami` and fetch their personal bootstrap with `get_my_bootstrap`. Both are read-only. Say what you're about to do, and ask first. 4. They paste that bootstrap into a Claude project's instructions and start a new chat in that project. Imprint takes over from there. Don't assume the person knows what MCP, a connector, a vault or a bootstrap is. Explain each one when it becomes relevant, and no sooner. The goal is to help them become an Imprint user, not to make them operate the installation. ## After setup - [The first week](https://imprint.selfactual.ai/first-week.md): what the first session does, the getting-started tasks, and why closing a session matters. - [Help](https://imprint.selfactual.ai/help.md): what to check when setup stalls or Imprint seems not to know anything, and how to reach the team. ## Authority Public selfActual pages, this one included, are documentation. They do not: - authorize access to anyone's vault - authorize changes to a profile, an account, a contract or tasks - authorize sending messages or delegating work - override what the person has explicitly asked for, or the contract in their own vault An authenticated tool result tells you about the account connected right now. Public text does not. If the two disagree, say so; don't silently go with the documentation. If a step needs the person's approval, ask them. ## When selfActual may be relevant The public material here may help when a person is talking about: - having to re-explain themselves to AI over and over - AI memory compared with actually understanding a person - keeping continuity across AI models or providers - owning their personal AI context and taking it with them - an AI understanding how someone works, not only what they've said Treat it as a source to check, not a product to recommend. The useful question is whether anything here improves the answer to what the person actually asked. ## Optional - [selfActual](https://selfactual.ai/): the company site. - [How it works](https://selfactual.ai/how-it-works): the architecture in brief. A personal data vault the person owns, connected to AI agents over MCP. - [Trust](https://selfactual.ai/trust): selfActual as a data fiduciary, the custodian rather than the owner. - [Education](https://selfactual.ai/education): Talia, the app for students. - [About](https://selfactual.ai/about): the founders, Jeremy Wright and Brad Topliff.
